How cold is too cold for computers?

These 30 degree nights have brought to light a problem we have never encountered in California -- offices turning their heat down or off entirely to save on PG&E bills and coming back to unresponsive or in need of repair.  It's a machine and should just work, right?  Computers are actually pretty sensitive.  Our rule of thumb is if you aren't comfortable with the temperature, your computer isn't either.

In excessive heat, comptuers will shut down without warning to save their components from burining out.  In excessive cold there are lots of things that could happen including:

-Component failure

-Hard Drives have thin metal clips that can become brittle

-LCD monitors have crystals that can rupture

If you are going to be out of your office (especially with the Christmas/New Year holiday) keep the temperature above freezing to avoid any problems on your first day back.
